Skip Bag Collection for Redhill

In Redhill, skips on the road are licensed by Surrey County Council, and its rules are set out in detail. Any skip that sits on any part of the highway needs a licence: the pavement, a grass verge or the side of the road. Only skip companies registered with the county can apply. Off the highway, things are much simpler. Surrey says a skip on private land, such as your front garden, needs no licence, and you can use any company you like. Wherever practicable, it asks for skips to sit inside the property boundary. For most Redhill homes with a drive or front garden, a skip bag placed there avoids the licensing route altogether. Here is what the county requires when that is not possible, plus the free alternative at Earlswood.

Surrey's conditions for skips on the highway are specific. A skip can be no longer than 5 metres or wider than 2 metres. Its ends must be painted yellow with red and yellow reflective markings, and it must carry the owner's name and phone number. At night it needs four yellow lamps, one on each corner. It must be visible to traffic from at least 100 metres in both directions. It cannot go within 30 metres of a junction, block a sight line or drainage, or cover hydrants and manholes. At least three traffic cones go on the approach side. A skip cannot block a footway without express permission, and then only with a protected 1 metre walkway. It must be taken off the road for emptying within 2 working days of being filled.

What goes in is restricted too. Nothing flammable, explosive, putrescible or noxious is allowed, and dusty loads must be dampened or covered.

For a small job, Earlswood Community Recycling Centre on Horley Road, RH1 6PN, takes construction and DIY waste. Free limits are two bags of up to 50 litres, or one large item, or one sheet of plasterboard. That allowance applies once in any seven days. Vans need a county permit, and loose loads are refused in vans.
