Watford's council tip is the Waterdale recycling centre on St Albans Road, near Garston (WD25 0PR). Unlike several Hertfordshire sites, it is open seven days a week, from 10am to 5.30pm, and on most bank holidays. That makes a weekend car run easy enough. A van-load, a garden clear-out or a heap left by a builder is another matter, because county rules decide what Waterdale will take and from whom. The borough council also offers bulky collections from your home, run by its contractor. Waterdale is run by Hertfordshire County Council, so county rules apply. You need an ePass, proof of address and a Council Tax account with a Hertfordshire council. Business waste is refused, and DIY waste is only accepted in limited amounts. Bins can fill quickly when the site is busy, and staff will say whether a full one is about to be emptied.

For collection from home, Watford Borough Council uses Veolia. You email a description and the number of items, and Veolia rings back to arrange a slot and take payment. General bulky items are booked in groups of up to three. Electrical items, including TVs and white goods, form their own category. Pianos and carpets need a quote first.

Watford is plain about what counts as dumping. Leaving scrap metal outside your house for collectors is illegal and treated as fly-tipping. So is leaving bags on the street or next to a litter bin.

If someone else takes your rubbish, the council asks you to get their waste carrier licence number and check it on the Environment Agency's public register. You should also get a waste transfer note.
