Rubbish Removal for Hitchin

Hitchin does not have its own county recycling centre. The county's Letchworth site is on Blackhorse Road in Letchworth Garden City (SG6 1HB), and it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Stevenage centre on Caxton Way opens every day, which helps if your free day falls midweek. Both need an ePass and proof of address. At home, North Hertfordshire Council runs a bulky waste collection with a few rules of its own. Between the two you can deal with a fair amount yourself. This page sets out the limits, so you can see where a waste carrier would save you a wasted trip.

Taking a van, a pick-up or a trailer to either county site needs a van ePass, which allows 12 visits in a year. Business waste is not accepted, and DIY waste is limited. At Letchworth you also need to pay Council Tax to a Hertfordshire council.

North Hertfordshire's bulky collection covers four groups: soft furnishings such as sofas, armchairs and headboards; white goods; small electricals such as TVs and printers; and other bulky items like wardrobes, tables and mattresses. Soft furnishings cannot share a collection with the other groups. If you have both, you need two collections, which may fall on different days. Six sacks of general waste count as one bulky item.

Fridges and freezers are back on the list. The council says it can accept bookings for them from Monday 5 October 2026.

On the day, items must be outside by 6.30am, and not in a garage or shed. The crew will not enter the property under any circumstances, so heavy items need to be brought out beforehand.
