Rubbish Removal for Harpenden

Harpenden has its own county recycling centre, on Dark Lane off Grove Road. Hertfordshire County Council closes it every Thursday and Friday, which catches out anyone planning a clear-out that starts at the end of the working week. It opens from 10am to 5.30pm on the other days. To get in at all you need an ePass and proof of address, and you must pay Council Tax to a Hertfordshire council. For a few bags in the car, that is a short trip. For a garage, a loft or a pile left after building work, the county's limits matter more. Here is what the rules allow, and where a waste carrier fits in.

In a van the rules get tighter. Vans, pick-ups, camper vans and car-and-trailer combinations all need a van ePass, which allows 12 visits a year. A hired van gets a short pass instead. It covers up to 3 visits within 7 days, and a household can have no more than 4 of them in 12 months. Bring the hire agreement on every visit.

DIY and home improvement waste is only accepted in limited amounts, and you may be turned away with more. Business waste is refused outright, and that includes waste from a builder working at your home.

For bulky items at home, Harpenden is covered by St Albans City and District Council. Its collection takes up to three items, each lighter than 100kg. Soil, rubble, sheds and fencing are not taken.

If a carrier takes the rubbish instead, check their registration before anything is loaded. Under government guidance, a council can fine a householder up to £600 for handing waste to someone who is not authorised to carry it.
