Rubbish Removal for Dunstable

Since 26 March 2025, every visit to a Central Bedfordshire tip has needed a booking. Residents choose a 20-minute slot online before they set off, and staff can turn away anyone who arrives without one. The council's site for the Dunstable area is Thorn Turn, on Grendall Lane off Thorn Road in Houghton Regis (LU5 6GJ). For a few bags in a car boot, the booking system works well enough. It is less simple for a van-load of junk, a garden full of cuttings or a worn-out sofa. The council's home collection service also has limits and a waiting list. This page sets out what Dunstable residents can and cannot do on their own, so you can judge when paying for rubbish removal makes sense.

Bringing household waste in a van or a trailer needs a permit as well as a booking, and permits are booked online. Some types of waste, such as DIY waste, need a permit even in a car. Vehicles with more than four wheels are not allowed on site. Neither are twin-axle trailers or any trailer longer than 1.8m or wider than 1.2m.

Thorn Turn is the one council site that accepts trade waste. Traders pay by weight there, and staff will ask to see a waste carrier's licence.

The council's bulky waste collection takes up to 12 large items. It currently quotes a 5-week waiting time and says it cannot collect fridges or freezers at the moment. Plenty of common items are refused outright. These include baths, basins, toilets and sinks, boilers and radiators, rubble, soil and laminate flooring, sheds, fencing and greenhouses, pianos, paint tins and bags of general rubbish. The crews do not take items apart either.

Before anything is thrown away, the council suggests reuse. It names Emmaus, Preen and Freegle, as well as local giveaway groups on social media.
