Loft Clearance for St Albans
What is in a St Albans loft depends a lot on the ward. In St Peters ward, the 2021 Census found 42.6% of households in a purpose-built flat and 24.9% in a terrace. In other wards the picture flips. In Verulam, 41.7% of households lived in a detached house, and in St Stephen the figure was 45.9%, with another 31.9% in semis. A house usually means a loft of its own, and a flat may share one or have none. Whichever kind of home you have, the district council and Hertfordshire County Council each set limits on what they will collect or accept. They are strict about old radiators and insulation in particular. Here is what they mean for a loft clearance.
St Albans City and District Council's bulky collection takes up to three items per booking from homes only. Each item must weigh under 100kg, and pianos are excluded. For some items, such as carpets or doors, the council takes only one of each. Waste from building work is classed as industrial waste and normally refused, apart from single items or very small amounts. That covers boilers, radiators, sheds and fencing. Asbestos and hazardous waste are not part of the service. For more than three items, the council will give an estimate.
County recycling centres now need an ePass for every visiting vehicle, including cars. It is free, there is no booking, and number-plate cameras check it at the gate. A household can hold up to three. Bagged loft insulation counts as DIY waste in Hertfordshire. So does plasterboard. Both are limited to a small free allowance each week, and anything over it is paid for by card on site.
Good items can avoid the bin altogether. The county's reuse shop at Harpenden Recycling Centre opens Saturday to Wednesday, 10am to 5.30pm. Its donation rules exclude ladders, pushchairs, child car seats and upholstered furniture without a fire safety label. Small electricals are welcome, but large appliances are not.

Answers
St Albans FAQs
Will St Albans council collect old radiators from my loft?+
Normally not. The district classes radiators and boilers as building waste, which its bulky service does not usually take, except as single items or very small amounts. A recycling centre or a licensed waste carrier is the usual route.
Do I need an ePass to take loft boxes to a Hertfordshire tip in my car?+
Yes. Hertfordshire residents now need an ePass to visit any county recycling centre, even by car. It is free and quick to apply for, and cameras read your number plate on arrival.
