Loft Clearance for Slough

Most Slough homes with a loft are semis and terraces. At the 2021 Census, 29.6% of the town's households lived in a semi-detached house and 26.3% in a terrace, with only 10.4% in a detached home. Whatever the house, everything in the loft comes down one box at a time, and then it has to go somewhere. Slough Borough Council offers a paid bulky collection and runs its own recycling centre at Chalvey. Both come with rules that shape a loft clearance more than you might expect. One is how the council counts items. Another is that vans are not allowed into the main tip at all. This page sets out those rules, so you can decide how much to handle yourself.

Slough's bulky collection takes a maximum of five items, plus up to two fridges or freezers. How items are counted matters. A table and four chairs count as five. A three-piece suite counts as three, and a bed base with its mattress counts as two. A wardrobe counts as one if it is bundled together. Booking details show up in the council's portal three working days after you book, and the items go on your next normal bin day. Leave them where your bin usually goes, because the crew will not collect from inside. Payment is taken when you book, and the council will not refund a cancellation.

The Chalvey recycling centre is on White Hart Road, off Spackmans Way, SL1 2SF. Cars under the 1.7 metre height barrier can drive in without a permit. Bring photo ID and proof of address, and someone to help, because staff will not unload for you. Trailers can be no longer than 1.5 metres or wider than 0.91 metres.

Vans and pick-ups are sent to the Waste Transfer Station weighbridge on the same depot instead. It is free for Slough residents. It opens on weekdays from 9am to 4pm and on Saturday mornings. You must wear a hi-vis vest, a hard hat and safety boots, and staff check that the load is household waste.
