Richmond upon Thames has a lot of homes with a roof space worth clearing. At the 2021 Census, 26.6% of the borough's households lived in a terraced house and 25.0% in a semi. Another 8.8% lived in a converted or shared house, where the loft may sit above several flats. Richmond Council gives residents several free or low-cost options. There is a booked tip at Kew with a reuse drop-off area, a bulky item collection and Mega Skip Days. Each one has limits on size, type and vehicle, and those limits matter once everything is down the ladder. None of the three takes asbestos, and a Mega Skip Day caps each household at six items. For a modest loft, Mega Skip Days let residents get rid of bulky items for free. On selected Saturdays each month, the council places large skips in one part of the borough. They are open from 9am to 11am or until they are full. Each household can bring up to six items, and a black bag counts as one. They are run with RHP and the Richmond Furniture Scheme, which take reusable furniture for local people. Paint, plasterboard, rubble and asbestos are refused. Residents can sign up for email alerts for their postcode.

The bulky item service collects from the home, not from businesses. Anything that two operatives cannot lift safely is refused. So is anything over 6ft long that won't fit the vehicle unless it is broken down. Pianos, carpets, doors and fitted units are excluded. Small electrical items go free with a booking.

Townmead Road, off Mortlake Road in Kew, takes most loft contents with a slot booked up to 14 days ahead. Good items such as furniture, laptops and baby kit can be left at the reuse drop-off in zone 1. Vans are allowed only if the load space is no bigger than 1.7 by 1.5 by 1.2 metres. Asbestos and tyres are not accepted.
