Loft Clearance for Reading
Reading is a town of terraces and semis. The 2021 Census found 28.2% of its households in a terraced house and 25.9% in a semi-detached one. Another 4.8% lived in a converted or shared house, where one roof can cover several homes. Whatever the house, clearing a loft means bringing old furniture, boxed paperwork and spare mattresses down in stages. Reading Borough Council's bulky waste service can take some of it, but its rules on upholstered seating now follow Environment Agency guidance. The re3 recycling centre at Smallmead takes the rest by appointment. Before you book anything, it helps to sort the loft contents into three piles: what can be reused, what the council will collect, and what needs another route. Here is how each one works for a loft clearance in Reading.
Reading's bulky service collects household items you would normally take with you when moving home. Upholstered seating, such as sofas, armchairs and footstools, must now be collected separately because of Environment Agency guidance. That means booking and paying for two collections if you also have other furniture. Mattresses are not affected by that rule. Once you submit a booking, you cannot change the list of items.
On the day, leave everything out before 6am, together, where your bins are collected and as close to the road as possible. You do not need to be home. The crew will not collect from inside the house, a garage, a back garden or behind a locked gate. That rule matters for a loft clearance, because everything has to be carried down and out first. Covering mattresses, bed bases and sofas with a waterproof sheet stops them getting wet and too heavy to lift. Cancelling with less than 3 working days' notice incurs a charge.
For reusable items, the council points to selling, Freegle and Freecycle, and to charities that take furniture. It names the British Heart Foundation and Christian Community Action. Anything else can go to Smallmead on Island Road, but every visit must be booked first.

Answers
Reading FAQs
Why do I need two bookings for an armchair and a bookcase from my Reading loft?+
Environment Agency guidance means Reading must collect upholstered seating separately from other bulky items. You book and pay for the armchair on one collection and the bookcase on another. Mattresses are not covered by this rule.
Can Reading's bulky waste crew collect from my side passage?+
Not if it is behind a locked gate. The council won't collect from inside a property, a garage, a rear garden or behind locked gates. Put items where your bins are collected, as close to the highway as you can.
