House Clearance for Stevenage

Stevenage Borough Council's bulky service is a useful starting point for a house clearance. A standard booking covers up to 10 items, and for 11 or more the council's assessed collections team will give a priced quotation. That still leaves gaps. Crews cannot collect from inside the home, everything must be outside, and slots are limited each week. Fitted items such as kitchen units and bathroom suites are not taken at all. For a probate clearance, a council tenancy being handed back, or a family home being sold, those limits shape the timetable. This page explains the local services, where reuse fits in, and the rules for upholstered furniture.

Bulky collections in Stevenage run between 7am and 12pm. Items have to be left outside the property, as crews cannot pick up from inside. Slots are limited across the week. If none are free, the council suggests checking back at the start of the following week, when new dates are added. Bookings cannot be amended once made, so a change of plan means cancelling and booking again.

The Stevenage recycling centre on Caxton Way is one of the county sites with a reuse shop. Reuse shops accept items that are clean, complete and working. Small electricals are welcome. Textile furniture without a fire retardant label is not.

Upholstered seating has its own legal route. Government POPs guidance says sofas, armchairs and similar seats containing POPs must be incinerated at an authorised site, not landfilled. They should be kept whole and apart from the rest of the clearance.

Terraced houses make up a large share of Stevenage's homes: 46.1% of households at the 2021 Census. Hallways and stairs in a terrace can be narrow, so allow extra time for large furniture.
