    House Clearance for Luton

Clearing a whole house in Luton is rarely one simple job. It is usually furniture, white goods, bags of general waste and a few things that need special handling. The council can help with part of it. Its bulky waste service removes up to 10 items in one visit. For a full house, that limit goes quickly. A single bed can use three places, because the divan base, the mattress and the headboard are each counted and charged as separate items. Several of the same thing count separately too. Probate, end-of-tenancy and downsizing clearances therefore tend to need one plan that covers everything, not a string of council bookings. Here is what Luton's rules mean for that plan, and the questions worth asking before anything leaves the house.

The council collects bulky items from outside, not from inside the home. Items must not be put on the road. They must sit no more than 5 metres from where the collection vehicle can stop safely. If there are steps up from the pavement, the items go at the bottom, at pavement level. Fridges and freezers must be emptied first, or they may be left behind. The council also says it accepts no responsibility for damage to your property during a collection, which matters when heavy furniture has to come down a narrow hallway.

Sofas and armchairs need extra care in any clearance. Government guidance says waste upholstered seating can contain persistent organic pollutants, known as POPs. It must be incinerated at an authorised site and must not go to landfill. It should also be kept whole and apart from other waste. Mattresses, curtains, blinds and beds sit outside that rule.

If the property is rented, be clear about who is clearing it. Luton says landlords pay to use the Progress Way Tidy Tip, unless it is the tenant bringing their own waste. Whoever does the work, ask for the carrier's registration details. Checking a carrier's registration is the kind of step that shows you met your duty of care.

    Luton FAQs

01How many items will Luton's bulky waste service take from a clearance?+

Up to 10 in one visit. Each part of an item counts on its own, so a divan base, mattress and headboard use three of the ten.

02Can old sofas travel in the same van as the rest of the clearance?+

Yes, if they are not mixed in. Government guidance allows whole upholstered seats on the same vehicle as other bulky waste, provided they stay separate and are unloaded separately. A mixed load has to be treated as POPs waste in full.
