House Clearance for Dunstable

A Dunstable house clearance often starts with one question: can the council take the furniture? Partly. Central Bedfordshire will collect up to 12 large household items per booking. Items made of separate parts are counted one by one, so a divan base, a mattress and a headboard use three of the twelve. The crew will not come inside. Everything must be outside at ground floor level by 7am on the day, and people living in flats must put items out at the roadside. That works for a few pieces of furniture. It does not suit a probate clearance where a whole home has to be emptied, or a tenancy that ends on a fixed date. It helps to know where the council service stops before deciding how to clear the rest.

Timing is the first catch. The council currently quotes a 5-week wait for bulky collections, and says it cannot take fridges or freezers at present. The excluded list then covers much of what a full clearance turns up. That includes asbestos and chemicals, car parts such as tyres, batteries and gas bottles, large glass items, windows and garage doors, and large sheets of cardboard. Builders' waste, garden structures and general bags of rubbish are excluded too.

Good furniture deserves a second life first. Central Bedfordshire points residents to Emmaus, Preen and Freegle, and to community groups that help pass on unwanted items.

Upholstered chairs and sofas are treated differently by law. Government guidance says waste domestic seating that contains POPs must be incinerated by an authorised operator. It must never be landfilled. The rule covers sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, recliners, futons, bean bags and dining chairs with fabric or foam.

For anything left over, Thorn Turn in Houghton Regis is the council's tip for the Dunstable area. Every visit needs a booked slot, and a van-load of household waste also needs a permit.
