Builders Waste Removal for Reading
Building work in Reading leaves you with two practical questions: where can the rubble sit while the job goes on, and where can it go when it leaves? On the first, Reading Borough Council licenses skips on the road, bans them outright on some town centre streets, and checks them harder over Christmas. On the second, the borough's own tip at Smallmead takes only a small free share of DIY waste, and building firms need a separate trade route. A single kitchen strip-out can run into both problems in the same week. Below is a summary of the local rules, taken from the council's pages, so you can plan the waste before the first wall comes down. If the volume is beyond what you can sensibly move yourself, a licensed builders waste collection avoids both.
A skip on private land, such as a front drive, does not need a licence in Reading. On the public road it does, and only the skip company can apply, for up to 4 weeks at a time. A longer stay needs a renewal. The licence is valid only inside the Reading Borough boundary, so a skip in a street run by a neighbouring council needs that council's permission instead. Some town centre roads are on a list where skips are not normally allowed at all, although special arrangements can sometimes be agreed.
Winter adds another layer. Under the town's Operation Everrt policy, skip applications for named central streets get extra scrutiny between mid-November and mid-January. The list includes Broad Street, Friar Street, Queen Victoria Street and part of Oxford Road. Non-urgent work may be pushed back until mid-January.
Smallmead Recycling Centre is on Island Road, RG2 0RP. Every visit is by appointment. Each household can bring up to 100 litres of DIY rubble or plasterboard per visit, on a maximum of 4 visits in any 4 weeks. Waste from paid work does not qualify. For small firms, re3 runs a trade waste service at Smallmead and Longshot Lane, open to micro-businesses based in the three re3 boroughs.

Answers
Reading FAQs
Can I put a skip outside my house on Friar Street in December?+
Probably not without a delay. Friar Street is on the council's town centre list, where skips are not normally permitted, and applications there get extra scrutiny from mid-November to mid-January. A skip bag or a collection on the day may be easier.
Do I need a licence for a skip on my own driveway in Reading?+
No. Reading Borough Council says skips on private land do not need a licence. You only need one when any part of the skip is on the public highway.
