Builders Waste Removal for Leicester
Leicester has two council recycling centres, and they handle building waste quite differently. Gypsum Close, LE4 9AB, takes any type of vehicle, with a permit where needed, and has a trade waste facility on the same site. Freemen's Common, on Islington Street, is for cars only, but it is the one site that will take household asbestos. Both accept a little DIY rubble and plasterboard free of charge, as long as it comes from your own work and not from a paid tradesperson. If a builder did the work, the council says disposing of the waste legally is their responsibility. So before a refit starts, it helps to agree who is removing the debris and where it will go. The section below sets out the city council's limits and permit rules. That should make it clear when a trip to the tip is enough and when a builders waste collection is the better plan.
Each household can bring up to 100 litres of DIY waste on a visit, which is two 50 litre rubble sacks. Instead, you can bring one item no larger than 2m by 75cm by 70cm, such as a bath. The limit is four visits in any four-week period. DIY waste covers plaster, cement, soil, bricks and rubble, kitchen units, bathroom suites, windows and doors.
Vans, pick-ups and cars towing a trailer longer than 1.4 metres need a council waste permit, and can only use Gypsum Close. A full permit allows 12 trips in 12 months. A temporary one, for a borrowed or hired vehicle, allows three trips in a month. Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing to get the paperwork done. DIY waste does not use up the 12 trips, but it still counts towards the four-in-four-weeks rule.
Asbestos goes only to Freemen's Common. The council accepts cement-bonded sheets only, double wrapped in plastic, up to eight sheets a visit, and asks you to phone first.
The council lists construction, building, maintenance and odd-job work as trade waste. Staff can ask to open bags to check what is inside.

Answers
Leicester FAQs
My builder left rubble after a paid job in Leicester. Can I take it to the tip?+
No. The council's rules say DIY waste must come from your own household work. Waste from a paid tradesperson is theirs to dispose of legally, for example through the trade waste facility at Gypsum Close.
Can I drive a hired van to Freemen's Common with plasterboard?+
No. Freemen's Common doesn't accept vans or pick-ups at all. Apply for a temporary permit and use Gypsum Close, keeping within the 100 litre DIY limit.
